Expedia India - Hotel room not issued despite taking full booking and payment

We had booked 5 rooms for 21st Oct and 3 rooms for 22nd Oct in Residency Lake Resort on 27th Sep 2017. We paid the amount due in advance. The email we got from Expedia states the rooms are booked and confirmed. When we reached the resort on 21st Oct, the hotel denied us rooms saying the hotel is sold out. The hotel had informed Expedia about over booking on 4th Oct, but Expedia did not taking any timely action of informing us about the cancellation, nor did it issue a refund for our holiday automatically. The holiday of 3 families of which 2 were from Mumbai was ruined and we had to come back dejected. We now need compensation for our loss of time and holiday.
